If you only have 10 minutes, focus on these three priorities:
- 1Start a preliminary college list — it doesn't need to be final.
- 2Decide on a testing plan: which test, and when the first official attempt will be.
- 3Have one real family conversation about what you can afford, before anyone falls in love with a school.
Stage Snapshot
Junior year is where the college process starts to feel real. Grades carry more weight, testing begins in earnest, and for the first time, actual decisions have to be made instead of just habits built.
That can feel like a lot at once. It isn't, if you take it in order.
You do not need a finished college list, a locked testing plan, or a fully mapped-out financial picture by September. Your job this year is to build a thoughtful strategy — not to finish the process. Everything you do now exists to make senior year calmer, not to complete it early.
Starting late, or behind on Stages 1–2?
Nothing below assumes a perfect record so far. If course selection or activities weren't very intentional in 9th or 10th grade, junior year is still early enough to build a real strategy — just expect a slightly more compressed version of this stage.
