Stage 7 of 7

Launch

Stay connected, not in control.

Timeframe
Move-in week through first semester
Primary goal
Support the transition to independence, while staying appropriately connected.
Reading time
15 minutes
Effort
~2–3 hours during move-in week; light, ongoing attention (not hours) across the semester after that

Quick Start

If you only have 10 minutes, focus on these three priorities:

  1. 1Say goodbye at move-in without lingering — it helps more than it feels like it will.
  2. 2Know that an adjustment dip a few weeks in can be normal, not a red flag on its own.
  3. 3Know where campus health, counseling, and academic resources are, before you need them.

Stage Snapshot

Move-in day feels like the finish line, but it's really the start of something new — for the student, and for the family. This stage doesn't have deadlines or decisions the way earlier stages did. It has a different job: staying lightly, supportively connected while a student builds real independence.

A small part of this stage is a specific logistical moment — move-in day itself. Most of it is more like temperature-taking: noticing how things are going, without hovering.

Landing here already a few weeks or months into the semester?

Everything below still applies — this stage isn't about following steps in order, it's about staying aware throughout the whole semester, whenever you start paying attention to it.
