- 1Help make move-in day a positive transition, giving your student room to take the lead.
- 2Expect that adjusting to college may have ups and downs. Stay supportive, and pay attention to persistent difficulties or safety concerns.
- 3Make sure your student knows how to access campus health, counseling, academic support, and safety resources before they're needed.
Stage Snapshot
Move-in day may feel like the finish line, but it's really the beginning of a new chapter for your student and your family. The focus now shifts from preparing for college to navigating everyday college life, building independence, and learning when and how to ask for support.
Your role is changing, too. Staying connected doesn't mean monitoring every decision or solving every problem. It means keeping communication open, encouraging your student to use available resources, and recognizing when they may need more support.
This stage is less about following a checklist and more about paying attention to how the first semester unfolds. There are still practical deadlines to watch, including course changes, billing, and future housing arrangements, but much of the work involves conversations, adjustment, and growing confidence over time.
